Breathing Uneasily: Ozone and Indoor Air Purifiers

06/09/2006 9:00 AM

Researchers at the Unversity of California, Irvine claim that in a small, poorly ventilated room, an indoor air purifier that produces even a few milligrams of ozone per hour can create an ozone level that exceeds public health standards. Ozone can damage the lungs, causing chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation. Depending on the design, some ionic purifiers emit a few milligrams of ozone per hour, which is roughly equal to the amount emitted by a dry-process photocopier during continuous operation. Ozone

I don't think devices like this are intended for enclosed spaces. What was CO2 build up in the same room?

Ozone in indoor environments

06/11/2006 10:33 PM

Reminds me of an attempt to use an ozone generator to disinfect water. Even though the ozone was directly injected into the water, the setup was such that the IAQ of the air became hazardous within a few hours due to ozone concentration. Ever since, I have been paranoid about the use of ozone indoors and advise strongly against ozone "air purifier". DO NOT use ozone for air purification! It is a lower atmosphere air pollutant!!
