Indoor Positioning Techniques

03/17/2008 1:54 AM

I have many queries regarding Indoor Positioning Techniques / LBS. These are the questions within me before starting my Masters degree's project work:

1) what are all the Indoor Positioning techniques available both in market & in development stage? Do provide me with explanations & links...

2) In Particular, How pratical is the In-building positioning methods are used? Does WLAN or Wi-Fi / CDMA or OFDM combination perform better positioning within an campus/Building and is it in use?

I'm interested in Positioning Techniques such as GPS navigational system. Now I would like to enter into LBS or Indoor Positioning for my thesis. I'm here to know the existing & under-development methods to start my thesis.

About 15 years ago, I designed some motor drives for a Autonomous robotic lifter, on the "head" it had a rotating laser scanner, around the walls, were positioned several bar codes, while the machine moved, each bar-code was scanned with the laser, and the different locations plotted within the robot to give it an idea of where it was in its world (laser triangulation with known base markers)

GPS is ok, but indoors, cannot be reliable, radio will be the same, how are you going to do your triangulation? Ultrasonics and vision (laser scanning/recognition) possibly the best ways to go, if radio (GPRS/GSM/WiFi) you could run into a problem if that station goes down (possible) you need something self contained, and if a obstacle is moved, your onboard scanners will need to cope with the change.

Let us know how you go, your findings, and your results.. don't just ask, then disapear, some of us may be interested ;o)
