If I ever have to deal with phone systems again I'm just going to go straight to a Asterisk based VOIP setup. Probably a Trixbox install (a linux operating system with Asterisk and a bundle of other applications on it already) on a dedicated machine.

The DID numbers (external phone numbers) can be purchased very cheaply (I prefer Unlimitel but they're just in Canada and only certain cities) and users on your system can easily be assigned extentions...either SIP phones (no add-in cards needed), regular analog phones (card needed), SIP softphones (numerous free ones available) or forwards to wireless etc. Voicemail can be forwarded by email as an attachement. A very nice bundle of features considering it's free.

I've experimented a bit with one...ran on an old P3 machine with an add-on card so one analog, external phone line could be connected to it. Behind the trixbox we had about 10 softphones.

Thanks, for the information; but I am looking for something like a basic circuit with only logic gates, relays and other discrete components.

Good luck! Might have to track down someone who replaces legacy equipment and let them know you're looking...

Hello.

There is a company in Jupiter Florida called TransTel. I have used their products in the past and they are quite straightforward. I don't know if their prodicts are exactly what you're looking for, but it is a place to start.

Best of Luck.

You know what? If this project works with normal analog telephones then I'd be interested in knowing how much it costs roughly. I like tinkering but when I'm in the garage and my wife is in the kitchen...nobody can yell loud enough to be heard so integrating it with the phone would be great.
