Mechanical Auto reversing screw mechanism

03/19/2008 8:58 AM

I am looking for an automatic screw reversal system and need a source for the internal view mechanics of a reversing screw mangle.

That was my first thought - assuming we've interpreted the OP correctly.

wildbil needs to look for the 'multiplier' variety.

Lets wait and see what wildbil has to say! I think we are on the right track but you never know!

Did you all pick up what it is for; a reversing screw mangle.

Haven't seen that term in over 60 years.

A mangle was a device for squeezing water out of clothes just out of a wash machine. You know the double roll device on the side of an up-right antique (For us) washing machine.

One of the things interesting about this cr4 is a lot of these questions are coming from countries just industrializing, hence in many ways replicating that which we have long left behind us.

Fascinating I say!

Multiplier variety? My lack of understanding of the term needs enlightenment.
Thanks

This is an ABU Garcia 7000 multiplier reel:

The term 'multiplier' just refers to the fact that there's gearing between the winding handle and the spool - so you don't wear your arm out every time you're dragging ½lb of lead back from a long cast!

The interesting bit is the line guide - the mechanism for ensuring that the line winds evenly onto the spool. As you wind in, the paper-clip shaped piece attached to the chamfered cube at the front moves from side to side. I couldn't find any pics of the mechanics, but I think it's the sort of thing you're after - a shaft with two opposite helical grooves (actually one groove - it turns round at either end!) with a follower fixed to the 'cube' tracking the groove. The shaft, of course, is geared to the rotation of the spool.

I've used multipliers both with and without a guide - and you certainly notice the difference!

Thanks John. I looked all over the net and could only find a small picture of the Penn gearing. I like it but do you know if the web has any better pictures or who makes this type of gear in a 3/8 shaft.

I can't find much about it - but Fishermen's headquarters has exploded views of the reels, with parts identified. The also sell the parts individually - you can get a worm shaft (item 042-910) for $3.50. Maybe buy one, measure it & scale it up?

My mechanical design colleagues may know a better source - I'd have thought engineering suppliers like SKF would have this sort of stuff in larger sizes - but I won't see any of them before Tuesday.

I've got to get to work. Try searching on worm shaft reciprocate reverse oscillate and terms like that. Should find a supplier on Globalspec.

Now I've taken the time to look, Nigh had it nailed in #5. Looks like the best bet yet - unless someone out there makes a standard product (so it's off-the-shelf & not too expensive).

Kudos to Nigh!

How about an automatic reversing ball screw like this one?

No problem, you will find lots of people who make these, I'm sure there must be someone more local to you.

A lot of textile machines ("doublers", e.g.) used a similar system. You might Google that.

Picked up the mangle term from a web site http://kmoddl.library.cornell.edu/model.php?m=68
Kind of interesting since they supply short movies of the mechanisms in operation. More of this type of site would be great.

I thank you all for input. I have a relatively light load, about 40 inch Oz of torque at the shaft. My objective is to not require limit switches for the reversing motion or at least to minimize the need. I'm off to look at the web sites and check out doubler.

Hey wildbil, check out the 'multiplier reel' for fishing too! They are lighter but do exactly the same thing! It's designed to guide the line onto the spindle in an even manor.

Any suggestions on off the shelf product a bit heavier than the fishing reel althugh a large reel may be adequate.

Re: Mechanical Auto reversing screw mechanism

well I finally found what I want but not who makes it. Two days ago I was looking at a scrapped garden hose winder and there it was, an automatic mechanical reversing double screw of Napier made of plastic. Talk about serendipity. I had found numerous foreign makers but now, who knows. I also looked at a reversing mangle but not simple enough. Now I know Ames and suncast use them. Monday I'll call for help there. I'll write what I find. Thank you all for input. I just posted a short resume' for anyone interested. There was plenty more but ......boring. Call my radio show. Would love to talk.
