wood floor to concrete adhesive

03/20/2008 10:49 AM

is there an adhesive to stick wood flooring to concrete which also acts as a damp proof barrier? if not can someone think of a way. it has to be a one part trowel applied wood floor to concrete/similar adhesive that is slightly flexible and also acts as a damp proof barrier.

come on you clever people!!

Liquid Nails FRP http://www.liquidnails.com/ViewProductDetails.do?productId=26

I would suggest using this to glue down a 1/2" plywood subfloor, then nail the flooring to the plywood. I did this 3 years ago in my own house and it hasn't given me any trouble .. Yet.

thanks robert, but i really want that product to be manufactured. i have worked in the wood floor fitting business for 22 years and have been using seperate products to glue wood to concrete. but with new methodology it should be possible now. im very happy to work with an adhesive expert/chemist to find an answer.

many thanks to all. wood fitter

Hi,

You may take a look at http://www.composite-agency.com/materials-forum.htm

They deal with materials, such as composites, adhesives and coatings, from an integrated perspective (adhesion strength, damp proof barrier properties, swelling issues etc.) and are willing to give some free advice ;-)

Good luck,

would bitumen tar work?

it's used on roofing as a water barrier and it's sticky and flexible and it's known to stick to concrete.

many thanks, but no it doesnt work to good. warps wide boards. works on 75mil wide and parquet flooring blocks. its going to have to be a copolymer of epoxy and polyurethane. this has good dpm qualities and enough flexibility

I would contact sikaflex corp. to check on their product line. a few yearsago, i saw two glass pieces that had a 1/2" thick bead of their sikaflex caulk and it was indestructable

mgPo4 with zeolite filler

mgPo4 is a ceramic cement and would have adhesive properies in excess of 4,000 psi as well as being waterproof.

I am just a guy who invents things in the ceramic cement realm. I can make it quite flexible if that is what is needed.

I do not have time to drop everything for a small project but I can work in things which interest me.

I travel a lot as well and that limits my lab time.

All said, if the planets align and you are interested I can work it in.

I am in S.E. asia for a couple more weeks and then will be in the US for a while.

The price seems ok. im a bit worried as to why cement products arent normally used with wood. also the product consistency? would it be typical of normal wood floor glues, bostik, sika etc. and could it be coloured brown. im presuming it adheres to moist screeds, latex levellers etc.

forgive my ignorance

Normal portland cement and concrete should not be used on wood due to the fact that they are a capillary structure and would hold moisture up against the wood causing it to rot. The fact that they only have adhesive qualities of about 70 psi is also a factor.

these cements on the other hand, being a "room temperature" ceramic there is no pore structure and the adhesion is over 4,000. They are also cohesive and bond to themselves in that manner.

The product consistency is whatever you make it.

What I make is a powder and is water-activated

If by 'would it be typical of normal wood glues" you mean is it like them, I would say probably it is different in many ways. It is all mineral based and has no petroleum products (plastic, urethane, methacrylates, etc.)

It is naturally a light brown but can be any color. It adheres to almost anything--even glass. It does not adhere well to polycarbonates and acrylics.

once mixed how long before it has to be used and fully cures.

it is certainly interesting. my concern is getting wood floor fitters to mix their own glue.

how green is it compared to the latest polyurethane adhesives.

how new is this type of product as i cant find much about it on the net.

im going to talk to some contacts about this product to get feedback.

many thanks woodfitter.

Pot life is manipulatable

If you are concerned about getting them to mix a little water with a powder then have it in two parts and run it through a static mixer nozzle. This is a two part binder like a urethane or an epoxy. That is where the similaraties end, however as this is all mineral based.

It is triple green and would not be anywhere close to being the environmental insult any urethane , epoxy, acrylic is.

It is too new to be on the net in this format at least.

Ceramic cements have been traditional earth cements for centuries.

You will hear of these things soon as I am coming into the market with several inventions within the next twelve months.

I have read this thread. I am a chemist and I am interested to learn if you have identified such a product. Bonding damp wood to concrete or cement seems to me to be a challenge.

What have you concluded?

Angus
