The SUNTORY mermaid ? - wave-powered boat

03/24/2008 2:58 PM

Just came across this news item. (From New Scientist website)...................

This video shows Japanese sailor Kenichi Horie setting off in a wave-powered boat that uses two spring-loaded fins to drive it forward using the sea's rocking motion. But powering boats like that is surely not this technology's best use.

Wind power is currently seeing a revival on large tankers to boost fuel efficiency. Perhaps Horie's power fins could make a similar contribution when combined with conventional power sources.

Video of prototype being tested.......

Spring-powered flippers as a clean propulsion method (about 5 knots). Interesting.

Practical for small pleasure craft perhaps?

"Horie, who has sailed around the world solo, travelled the Pacific in a yacht made of recycled beer cans in 2002".

Hum, I hope he got to drain those beers all by himself. Seems to me, to make this work, you heading would be important. Probably, not much better than relying on the wind. But it is very interesting. Remember, not that long ago, you could only sail with the wind.

Here's the SkySails home page (if it comes up in German, there's a button for English).

And here's an article on the successful maiden voyage:

It's the successful outcome of imaginative power being applied to a presumably outdated technology.

Reminds me of the flippers on penguins sub from the show Batman

6' model

The best part is Horie San's actually work and by wave power.

Back to the ol Bat design board, Horie has given me an idea.
