how to Analyze an image sensor

Not sure what sort of sensor you have.
I've only played with the simplest single line devices years ago, but this may help to get the ball rolling...
The most basic sort will have you clocking a charge out of a analogue shift register, what used to be called a bucket brigade device. If you are at this basic analogue level you can use analogue techniques like op-amps & comparators.
More likely your data will be have been converted by a AtoD coverter in which case you can do your processing digitally, presumably each bit will have a digital value (8bit? 10bit?) corresponding to the grey level of that bit... (assuming you are taliking monochrome).
