If you don't have specific knowledge of the field you are interviewing for I suppose the best you can do is ask for previous projects, employers and contacts for each and then follow up and see what kind of result the project had. You have to watch out for "axe grinders" when you do this, otherwise it's the only substitue I know of for personal knowledge of an area of expertise.
