How do I demolish an elevated concrete walkway?

04/02/2008 10:01 PM

I have about a 4" thick elevated concrete walkway/ deck attached to my house that I would like to demo. It is framed with steel. Any tips on demoilishing this myself? It is not too big...approx. 3 ft x 10ft. Thanks

Jackhammer (small electric ones can be rented at Home Depot, Lowes...), Sawzall (ditto), a lot of water while you are working, and a big frosty mug of beer for after!

Without seeing it, it's really hard for us to spot out pottential problems. Like KW0 saidabove, the tools are pretty readily availavle, and a small electric chipping hammer should do just fine. lay down a couple tarps to make collection of the really small bits easier. Keep it wet. Drop big chunks to the ground for further demo. TIE OFF! se some kind of harness setup so you don't fall with the concrete. Load it up, and haul it off to an approved disposal facility. That will be approx 1,500 pounds of stuff, so it will likely take more than 1 trip.

Man, that was a lot of work just typing it. I'll bet you can hire a local handyman who will do it almst as cheaply as you can rent the tools and dispose of the waste, that way, you have more time for yourself for the same capital outlay, and you do not risk getting injured.

Board up any windows beneath it while you are working...

You can do it take your time and be careful. I wouldn't hire a handyman to save money because the liabilities escalate exponentially.

Prepare the site for demo, erect a lean to type protection under for the exterior wall, could place base of lean to/ramp (plywood) into small demo container available from sanitation companies, they deliver and pick up (:

Go to tool rental supply explain your intentions and take advise. Suggest a demo cutting saw for concrete and steel, cutoff in manageable sections let drop into can; why handle twice?

Enjoy the frosty mug!
