This question is so loosely stated that the correct and complete answer would take several months to compile.

Please provide more details about the circumstance, application, standards you need to work to and possibly field of application or end product.

Assumption...

The cables you are using are approved for the conditions of use and the nature of the electrical system (as in voltage and amperage) in the jurisdiction in which you reside.

Answer...

As per the published manufacturer's instructions. Anything less then that will more then likely void any warranty provided by the manufacturer and expose the installed system to a huge possible failure point.

Medium voltage systems are not to be screwed with using information you garnered from this or any forum. There is no easy way to do this. Get the data from the maker of the cables on how to terminate the cables and follow them! Doing anything less then this is very irresponsible.

The cable jointing procedure will depend on the type of cable and type of cable jointing kit that you want to use. First you must specify the exact voltage instead of generalising as medium voltage (the medium voltage you mean 11 kv to 66 kv ) The jointing kit will be different for different voltages. You have to specify the type of cable ( PILC , XLPE etc) Jointing kit are of different types (pre moulded termination, cold applied termination, Heat shrink termination ) .The type of joint ( straight joint , end termination, indoor termination, out door termination etc. So please specify your requirement correctly to get a proper reply

I was taught that medium voltage was 2.4 kV to 34.5 kV which covers electrical distribution, substation, and utilization equipment found in industry.

Is there perhaps some varying parameters linked to geographic location that makes it different?

I think it depends on your field of study. Mine was electronics. I don't remember ever being taught a specific range, but I've always thought of low voltage as that which you would find in a car, or below about 15V. Medium was from there up to where you begin to feel shock, around 60 to 100V, and high was everything above that!

I think you are right, it depends on what you are looking at. There seems to be no specific definition of what voltage range is low or medium or high, just that "understanding" within a particular concept.

My low is their "ouch" kind of thing.

Hi Case

Your 'ouch' reminds me: the digital voltmeter on my Tektronix 2236 'scope indicates 'ouch' when you connect an out-of range voltage. I don't have a variable supply handy at the moment to test it, but it says 500V peak, so I presume anything above that would be considered 'high voltage' for that device.

P.S. I hadn't noticed your motto - I like it!

Dick

My 15 year old daughter said that to her mum when she asked me something on my birthday 3 days ago. It stuck as we all laughed. I had to change my moto straight away.

case491

In India our normal electrical distribution systems are

230/ 440 V , 3.3 kV, 6.6 kV 11 kV , 22 kV ,33 kV

66 kV, 110 kV , 220 kV 400 kV lines.

We normally have a convention and refer the system as :-

Low Voltage : up to 11 kV

Medium voltage : 11 kV to 33 kV

HV/ EHV : 66 kV and above

Sounds like the commonly accepted range in power distribution and transformer houses.

I am sure that there will be several members that are specialist in that field, I am unfortunately not. Their advice will be far more worthy than mine.

I have so far only tried to get the context of your question clear so that we all know what you are asking. Too often valid questions are flamed as they are not clear to all.

Good luck.
