Hazardous Area Equipment - Explosion Proof

04/08/2008 11:21 PM

I came across a project to mix and bottle some products that may be somewhat flammable. The system that I need to integrate includes tanks, pumps, mixing tanks, piping and filling equipment.

Does anyone know a process equipment manufacturer that has experience handling products for hazardous areas? (flammable liquids and semi-viscous products)

Please let me know

Thanks and Best Regards

JFM

Some of the points I can suggest are:

1. Proper earthing of equipment to avoid static charge development.

2. Cleanliness of equipment and their surroundings.

3.Identification of probable materials and conditions those may cause explosion and ensurance of preventive measures to avoid them or safe handling of them.

4. USe of flame proof equipment esp. electrical devices.

For better understanding you can visit some good explosive manufacturer's premise.

regards

Most process equipment manufacturers can come with ex-proof equipment but you have to set very clear protection level or you will pay too much money. The NFPA can help you with setting the required standards - http://www.nfpa.org

It sounds like your process will have at the least a CL I, Div II rating (NEC 70 article 500). It could be elevated to a CL I, Div I rating depending on how contained your process will be. Depending on the Div rating, your equipment can vary. NFPA, in particular NEC section 70, articles 500 & 501, will give you guidelines on which division you'll fall under. An engineering evaluation may be needed and may be required by your insurance provider. To answer your immediate question, Appleton, Killark, Cooper Crouse-Hinds, handles electrical fittings, enclosures, switches, etc for both Div I and Div II areas. Hermitically sealed components are offered by other companies, such as Allen Bradley, for use in Div II areas. Rosemount (Emerson), Foxboro are a couple of companies that will have your instrumentation needs for use in these areas. If you have some specific questions, which you can't find the answer to, let me know. I deal with hazardous classified areas on a daily basis, CL I, div I & II, as well as CL II areas. ben.mickler@covidien.com

There are many equipment manufacturers that can provide you with equipment for handling hazardous products. You have to be more specific. What kind of flammables will you be handling (NFPA area classification) and in what quantities and concentrations?

There is plenty of experience in explosion proof technology and products available. The entire electrical installation must comply with Article 500 of the national electrical Code.

Might suggest the services of a professional electric engineer familiar with this type installation to provide you with a design.....SO....you wont blow up!

Thank you everyone. I am back in the office with more information about this project.

The company makes products for automotive use. ie fuel additives, oil additives, anti-freeze etc...

They hold the bases in 30,000 GL tanks from there they pump the bases to mixing tanks where they mix in additives....form there to holding tanks of finished product and then to the bottling line

They have 4 categories of products:

1 ) light oil based products

2 ) heavy Oil Based products

3 ) Fuel based products

4 ) Water based products

The concern is #3. Which are classified as Class 1 Div 1

I am looking for manufacturers of "high volume tanks", "mixing tanks", pumps, piping and Controls that have experience working with Class1 Div 1 products

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Best Regards

You were not very specific regarding the materials you expect to handle, what type of containers you intend to fill, etc.

I have worked with a comapny, Summit Process Design that may be able to help.

You have not specified what is "some what flameable". You have to be very carefull in handling such project. I will suggest better to hire consulting engineers for such project who can take up job on turnkey basis. We have such consultants here in India. Ofcourse it depends on size of your project and if you can afford their fees. You will need all flame proof equipment such as motors, pumps, electrical switchgears, valves etc. In my city Mumbai India there was recently accident where 10 lifes were lost and around 50 persons injured in one small factory in Industrial Park located on 4th floor had explosion and fire. Factory was mfg. Room freshners packed in areosol containers. Raw matterial required was inflamable and it caught fire and exploded due to negligence. So it is very much important to take all precautionary measures in order to avoid such accidents.
