Pipe Repair and Valve Issues

04/09/2008 5:57 PM

I am interested in obtaining recommendations from engineers working with the maintenance of large water pipes (~42" diameter) and associated valves. In particular, I am interested in recommendations as to how to most cost effectively repair/replace ancient (1890's vintage) water mains and also the recommended frequency for the exercizing of valves used with water lines of this general size.

What is the most practical means for inspecting of such large mains to determine their structural condition? How frequently should this be done?

Size isn't the issue...

Globe valves are generally more cost effective in general usage. Gate valves are more effective if quick actuation is required using 2 or 3 lead screw threads to accomplish quick open or close.

Can you contact the original manufacturer of valve? When stationed aboard a Naval repair facility we'd often require replacement of old valves and surprisingly the original foundry was still in business usually in Pennsylvania or Ohio and Connecticut USA..

They didn't pay me good to source though I'd then need to re-manufacture on site so I searched diligently.

For pressure piping, the ASME furnished an American National Standard code, ASME B31.G, which is a Supplement to ASME B31 Code and Manual for Determining the Remaining Strength of Corroded Pipelines.

For water pipeline, I think the AWWA has a very interesting standards for water networks and pipelines. Or you can use ASME B31.G

Note. AWWA = American Water Workers Association.

AWWA is a good source. I would also look for information from DIPRA-Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association and some of the old cast iron pipe manufacturers American Cast Iron, Clow, etc.).

Pipe lining might be an option.

Get all the information you can on current system, length and diameters of pipe, year installed, patches made, etc.

Every time a repair or patch is made on the system, observe or get a report on cause of break, condition of surrounding pipe, degree of corrosion, etc.

For the size of what you're describing, I hope someone is thinking in terms of what the big bucks and potential inconveniences are during replacement or repair. It can be done, but even with "cost effective" design and plans, this is a major undertaking.

Expect to do a lot of research and surveying of the market place for solutions. Good luck!

Concur on using liners, especially since it is likely time will be of the essence to get the system up and running rapidly. There are companies that do this, it is fast, effective, and, to my way of thinking, cost-effective. Do an online search using the key words "pipe lining" and see if you find several sources.
