Product Backup

04/11/2008 11:18 AM

The application is a forming line for disosable caryout cartons the trim left over is ground up and blown back to designated silo's.
Basically, when a machine is shut down, forming line, and the blower is turned off, the line to repro silo back fills with material from silo because other machines are still running into silo. This problem has been present since the opening of the plant. We now leave the blowers run most of the time to prevent this from happening.

What our task is to come up with a check valve to prevent "flake" material entering the flake line when the blowers are not running. This check will more than likely be a wear item and require replacement from time to time, so installation must be simple and ease of maintenance in design.

It is nearly impossible to gain access to the inside of silo's, which was my first thought of a "flapper" style valve.

Please ponder and let me know of any ideas we could try!!

Thanks,
Tim

Unfortunately it sounds like a design flaw, designed by the same person that created the leaf blower (A vacuum will work better).

The blowers are creating a positive pressure, and any hole will result in spillage or in your case back-up. An easy fix is to have a shut-off valve that in no way obstructs the flow during operation.

The proper engineering fix is to create a negative pressure in the silo - An exhaust fan on the top of the silo that has more CFM than all the input blowers combined.

Be careful entering a silo. It is considered a confined space, and requires gas testing and safe entry procedures.

Question is the pressure from the other blowers into the silo causing the turned off blowers to rotated backwards? Silo has to have filter for the volume of air and may be increasing it would help. May have been under sized from the start. Which is forcing chips back down the turned off lines.

We used to call them 'reed valves' as they would open only when a blower or suction is applied then shut.

Thanks for the replies, we are leaning towards a slide gate at the silo, that senses air flow towards the tank, the next issue is the physical space available.
