Valve train code requirements

04/11/2008 4:39 PM

I have an old multi-burner, gas fired box furnace that I want to re-wire and install a new flame monitoring system in. That is the easy part. The difficult part is that the valve train is ancient and needs updated. Where would I find code requirements for this application?

That would depend on where you live.

What you wish to undertake here is a huge project, that will require a lot of money, time, and expertise.

I've just completed the complete overhaul of 3 large forge furnaces, 2 28 ft, carbottoms, and a 30 ft rotary, all capable of up to 2300F. First, the removal of all old refractories, to be replaced with new. We required all new burners, from North American. We needed new burners that had the many new connections to accept spark plugs and UV sensors.

The flame management system we chose was the Honeywell 7800 series, with UV sensors. This system also handles the spark system. This system monitors proof of flame at all times.

Next was the control loop. We went with PLCs, but Honeywell UDC 3200's would do the job just fine.

These are multi-zone furnaces, so we used a Honeywell Herculine actuator ( 4-20mv), for each gas and air valvedrive. There were actuators to control the dampers for furnace pressure. The PLCs also control door movement and sand seal operation too. There are many other systems too, but with this configuration everything is easily controlled from a HID.

Anyway, most of this was beyond doing completely in house. I hired a combustion engineer, and contractors skilled in this type of overhaul. They know the codes well, so that was not much of a problem.

I spent may hours with the combustion engineer, going over plans, asking questions, making suggestions, and learning a whole lot.

However, your old furnace may be grandfathered, so you could get away with making changes, to a point.

My point is you need professional help here. Manufacturers can help you a lot here, but it really pays for it self to hire an experienced combustion engineer. If you are in my area, I can suggest some really good ones.

Once we turned them on, and I ran a unformity survey, we where in production in days.

Bricktop is correct. However if you send me the spec's of your unit, your location, gas pressure, etc. I will layout some basics of the improved system and give you the code requirements. I will give you the name of someone close to you that you can trust to help you. It will only take a few days put this together for you.

I fabricate gas trains for large boilers and lime kilns and occasional furnace in my shop. The guy I work for does all the design, programing etc. You can contact him at john.street@streetauto.com John knows the codes and regulations for this very well for USA and many other countries and he is a very nice guy. He can help.
