Long Ago, In a Galaxy Far Far Away

07/03/2006 3:03 PM

Scientists from the European Southern Observatory(ESO)have discovered what they are referring to as a "large primordial blob, more than 10 billion light years away". What they mean is they have found a large concentration of matter that is not emitting in any band from IR to x-ray. The "blob" is roughly 200,000 light years in diameter.

The dark blob

Interesting! This "blob" may turn out to be more indirect evidence for the elusive dark matter of the universe. According to standard theory, galaxies could only form in the presence of huge amounts of dark matter, making up at least 70% of the mass of universe.
