Electrical and Electronics Assembly Benchmarking

04/14/2008 9:47 PM

We are wanting to evaluate where we are in relation to "world best practice" in manufacture of electrical assemblies.

Is there already a benchmarking survey that is suited to electrical assembly organisations?

We already are reviewing "manufacturing" benchmarking surveys, so we can rank ourselves in areas like raw material delivery, material selection and customer service.

What is lacking from those surveys is process related performance like defects per million solder joints, scrap as proportion of production, "first time yield".

We are interested in "surface mount" and also "through hole" manufacturers.

Thanks in advance for your thoughtful feedback.

Have already searched CR4 for "benchmarking" and "world best practice" along with JEDEC site.

Hi there.

I would advice you to participate in Aberdeen benchmarking surveys for different topics.

Have a nice day.

If you find a survey or additional information please let me know. We use the IPC standard: IPC-HDBK-610 for electronic assembly. Good luck.

I suggest you check out these two websites for information related to your questions

Thanks all for the replies so far.

Have started browsing those options and registered for a few sureveys.

IPC A 610 and JST-001 are what we use to assess individual joints, but we want to know whether things like 12 defective joints per million made is good, average or poor.

An update for those still monitoring this thread.

It's now a month since the last entry.

Have joined Abberdeen survey group and while they have great surveys on employee involvement, supply chain management, delivery management, IT, banking, communications and so on there seems to be nothing related to internal performance measures, especially for electronics manufacture.

IPC and JEDEC also replied with no known materials. (There was however a study group for bare circuit board manufacture.)

Stay registered on this thread for a month or so and I'll see if we can broadcast some "rough cut" measures that we can share as a starting point, develop the definitions and then maybe approach CR4 admin to run it on line with some poor sap (Probably me) crunching the numbers for all.

Participated in a similar thing a few years back for a local national testing laboratory organisation, so it won't be too difficult.

I must apologise for not getting back tot his sooner. Since the thread was posted, I've been "re-deployed" within the factory and have no signiifcant contact with the electronics facility.

This means that I am no longer working on this project and so have abandonned the survey proposal.

At the time that I was moved, we were running at around 5 defects per million opportunities for all failure types combined (dry and partial joints, damaged parts, missing or upset parts and so on.)
