Please give some guidelines regarding relay operation in automotive and the possible applicable areas. What are the factors and standards need to be considered from the design point of view?
Hmmm... that's like saying "Tell me how a light bulb works and where I can use them in a house?"
But here is about as close as I can come up with on such a vague topic:
Relay coil must be the same as the available supply (i.e. 12VDC)
Relay contacts must be capable of switching the desired load On, and more importantly, Off. Assuming whatever the load is will likely be DC, the switch contacts of the relay must be capable of interrupting the arc when they open, which is slightly more difficult with DC than with AC.
Applications: The starter motor has a relay, the ignition system has relays, the turn signals, brake lights, head lights etc. have relays, in fact most electrical accessories have relays
