05/02/2008 3:39 AM

For hydro testing how to calculate the blind thickness for 20" pipe sch30 for 51 bar.

The rating or class of standard flanges is selected from ASME B16.5 depending on: type of flange material, design pressure and design temp. For you case all 3 elements were missed.

But if you use a flange material ASME SA105, Design pressure (not operating) of 51 bar, and ambient temp., the rating of whole flanges including the blind one is 300#, where the flange will resist a pressure of 51.1 bar.

But if you ask me my opinion, I'll tell you to select the flange with higher rating such as 400# or 600#.

In the other side, to calculate the max. design pressure of any flange with a such rating, you have to select the flange material and also you have to select the design temperature. Please refer to the following site : ASME B16.5 Flanges

Note. For design calculation of a blind flange thickness, please refer to CR4 thread :Calculation of blind flange thickness.

Note 1. If we considered the hydrotest pressure is 51 bar, that means the design pressure is 34 bar per ASME B31 (i.e. the operating shall not exceed about 25 bar), in this case and at ambient temp. for a CS material A105, the flange rating or class shall be 300#.

Note 2. Per ASME B31, the hydrostatic pressure Ph = 1.5 Pd (Sat amb. temp. / S at design temp.), where Pd = Design Pressure, and S = Allowable Tensile Strength of Material.

• For design of Non-Standard Flanges (integral & blind), see CR4 Thread Flange Hydro Pressure Analysis and you can download the following samples of design calculations: Flange_Design_Calculations.PDF & Blind_Flange_Design_Calculations.PDF.
