In-house plating

05/16/2008 9:23 AM

I'm looking for a little feedback from anyone who has experience with the brush-on or dip plating kits from Caswell or Hunter Products. Looking to flash brass with nickel then plate with silver. I'm building small test fixtures for measuring resistance and need good physical contact points. We're building small numbers of different fixtures and sending them to a plater in small lots is a killer just on the minimum lot charges.

You can use brush-on or dip processes. Just follow directions and don't take short cuts. There are also products such as Cool Amp, that deposit silver by simply rubbing powder on with a cloth. This is a great product when resurfacing is required in the field. Just remember that these coating processes usually involve the use of toxic chemicals.

We plate silver directly onto copper and its alloys such as brass, with no nickel intermediate layer. You don't need a diffusion barrier for this material combination. The most important parameter in making precision resistance measurements is to establish an air tight electrical connection between the silver plating and whatever it is connecting to. Contamination in the atmosphere (especially sulfur) will degrade the contact resistance over time. If you can form a gas tight seal, you can achieve micro-ohm contact resistance for periods of many years.

That is exactly what I was looking for right down to the resistance issue. The plated units will be used in a controlled atmosphere where the only variable will be humidity levels.

Thank you,

Bill
