Working Harder, Staying Even

08/03/2006 1:14 PM

In case you haven't noticed, you are working harder, yet, not necessarily getting compensated for your efforts. At least that is what the annual Design News salary survey reveals. Today's engineers are learning new skills and have added supervisory and/or budgetary responsibilities. For example, roughly 50% of the engineers interviewed for the story say they are working in more areas than they did a year ago but their take-home pay did not increase. How does your situation compare?

Working harder/less pay

08/04/2006 1:29 PM

I think this is a perennial problem for engineering type jobs, as we are on the cost end of business and not the money end (eg. sales). Even if we design something brilliant and lucrative, the salesmen are the ones associated with the sales figures. Also, in my experience, most of us are not aggresive/effective self promoters, but rather sit back and wait passively to be rewarded, even when we have additional responsibilities and workload heaped upon us. After all, it's only logical and balanced that harder work should equate to higher pay, right? Guess what, that's the way WE think, not necessarily the way Management thinks (the most for the least). I hope that eventually this will sink in, as it is up to us and ONLY us to do something about it. Or you can do what I did, and go self-employed. But this requires even MORE self-promotion than getting your due at a job.
