KIA SPORTAGE HARD START PROBLEM

05/22/2008 9:07 AM

i have a 96 kia sportage 4wd 138000miles. i have a hard/no start problem after a short drive (about 5 minutes). if vehicle cools down, will restart but runs poorly. here's the kicker, if you disconnect the neg. batt. cable and touch it to the pos. cable(like discharging a capacitor), vehicle will run fine and usually will run good for days. already replaced ecm, alternator(was bad) and battery. as far as i know, all the harness ground updates have been done. anybody have a clue?

Whoa Uplink ; Dont ever short your batt. cables ! If you have as you described as only " touching" them together you are lucky enough to only have reset the computer as if you only disconnected them for one minute to (normally) reset the computer !

You said you have pviously replaced the ECM , why ? For the same reason or what ?

Do you have a check engine indication now and or before you changed the ECM ?

List all details and i might be able to help you .

The starting problem is not unusual after a short trip as the control system can think the engine is still cold & over fuel it. I've found on several high mileage cars that they will generally restart ok if you hold the accelerator pedal on the floor as you start the engine (don't pump the pedal, just hold it flat).

Can you get access to a fault code reader to check for recorded faults?

Shorting the battery is a scary operation, I can't see how it would help anything apart from the disconnection resetting the ECU as mentioned earlier, can you achieve the same result by pulling the ECU fuse for about 15 minutes?

i should have been more specific. the neg. cable is OFF the battery when i touch the cables together. the cold start flooding makes sense. is there a fix for this problem. it seems to run "fat" after i finally get it started. when i touch the cables together , it runs a lot better until it acts up again. thanks for the reply

I don't know the Kia, if it's a carburetor engine, that's just the way they are, the cold start system is not clever enough to deal with a half warm engine. If it's an injection engine maybe a temperature sensor is faulty.

it's an injected engine with these models having tons of harness issues. this vehicle should of had all the fixes and updates already but you never know.

i also have 1996 sportage. i found by taking fuses out of brake lights cleaning it or replace with new fuse , in the footwell drivers side i took them all out as good measure . the central locking also started to work properly , see if that cures all or most of the probs .
