Toward where the education goes?

05/22/2008 11:02 AM

I've been observing through several threads that it seems expertising in many companies is decreasing due to retirement of "old" engineers which are replaced by younger (and cheaper) ones but with less experience.

Here in Europe we actually are inmmersed in the changes arisen by the "European Space of Higher Education" which intends to make a more homogeneous universitary education across the European Community.

According to that, the engineering (or physics...) degree will consist in just 4 years. Actually are 5 and the previous was 6 years, with more hours per year than now. That means the learning time was reduced in more than 1/6. Now we face a new reduction.

At the same time, in my own country (Spain) the recently Parliament approved Education Law, allows that students in the elementary school pass the course with up to 4 different matters pending!!!

I've recently heard, on a TV debate, a Congresist of Parliament saying that effort is "elitist". How this people think an university professional could be formed without some effort?

I like to know which is the opinion of my CR4 colleagues and which is the actual situation and trends in your respective countries.

Where the education goes?

Directly to the wall!!!!!!!

In an other European country several years ago a prime minister wanted to get a high % of pupils passing their school final examination. He claimed to reach over 80%.

The way to obtain the results was very simple: the exterminators got the order to reduce the level of requirements, and out of a sudden results went up till 85...87 % !

That those generations were sacrificed to a demagogic approach nobody thought about. In fact it was an antisocial measure since only pupils from educated families got due to parental help a traditionally correct level.

Now changes are done but so many suffer till today from what they did not learn in school as basics. I receive from engineers (some with a MD) some times reports full of grammatical errors, of spelling errors (some body from CR4 will tell as he told me "they should use the spelling checker") or even with wrongly used words some times with exactly the opposite meaning.

There is in northern Europe the trend to increase the number of active seniors and permit to retired to work pat-time in order to allow a generation know-how transfer but it will still take years till it will become a usual practice.

There are many subjects to discuss.

Here in India we have education system as under:-

1.Child joins the KG at age of 3yrs.

2.At age of 6 yrs he is admitted to school and completes school after 10 yrs. at age 16.

3.After 2 years in college he completes XII std.i.e at age 18 yrs.

4. He joins professional colleges such as engineering and after 4 years he completes the course. For medical college he has to study for 7 yrs.For science, commerce, arts degree he needs 3 yrs.

Here educational boards and universities are independent of any political interference.

Some institutes like IIT are well known through out the world for churning out best engineers who get placement from in U.S,U.K,Japan etc. Also management institutes such as IIM are best known in the world.

Sorry, here fresh engineers and MBAs are getting jobs at very high salaries. Further more I have observed that young professionals are more intelligent, bold and smart.

If that's the situation in your country, don't be sorry! My congratulations

Jawaharlal Nehru's legacy—albeit that his clear vision does not as yet extend to all strata of Indian society. But, therein might also lie the two edged sword that has cut through the U.S.' one time preeminence. It is hardly able to be disguised, although many special interest persist in trying, that a major factor in the decline of US education has been the notion of inherent egalitarianism...of rights without responsibility...of achievement without effort...of reward without merit...of success without accomplishment...of affluence without sacrifice.
