A mechanical inspector might be involved with a variety of tasks around rotating machinery typically, including carrying out alignments, doing vibration analysis, and other machinery checks including oil systems, seal systems etc.

A NDT inspector is more concerned with stationary equipment vessels, heat exchangers, piping and they will carry out Non destructive tests including liquid penetrant, and magnetic particle tests, perhaps radiography, thickness gauging, and maybe shear wave ultrasonics. The largest part of their work however is visual inspection of piping and vessels.

Sorry to disagree...

A NDT inspector job is related to one or more Non Destructive Testing technique (like ultrasonics, dye penetrant, radiographics, eddy current, etc) which may be used in mechanical or any other type of equipment. This qualification is related to the type of industry. Just have a look to ASNT or EN standards on NDT personnel qualification and certification: For any qualification level, it's required to pass three examinations, one of them, "general" related to the generic aspects of specific technique, other "specific" directed to evaluate the aspirant knowledge about the specific application of the technique to his specific industry branch.

A mechanical inspector can be involved in what you've mentioned, but not necessarily limited to rotating machinery, but also on any type of machinery such as valves, cranes... and also to static equipment like a boiler. At least I wouldn't rely on a inspector just qualified as level II on dye penetrant to workshop and field erection of a power boiler (just as example).

Don't forget ASME B & PV Code. It makes a clear difference between NDT inspectors and "Authorized inspector". The code deals just on the pressure retaining function of equipment and, how do you classify the "Code inspector" if it is not "mechanical".

I think you know ASME is the acronym for American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Please don't think I'm rude, it's just my poor English

Best regards

We agree completely, I was describing the two position in general terms and as I have experienced them in plants in the US. Your experience may differ a bit...

I was at one time a Level III NDT Engineer certified in PT, MT, and UT techniques... I also spent a lot of time with the ASME B&PV code.

Thank you. Don't think my experience is quite different of yours... I've been level III according to former SNT-TC-1A, being responsible for company inspectors examination and worked a lot with ASME because most of the plant projects in which the company have been involved required to comply with it.

Best regards

a mechanical inspector is a person, who involves in inspection activities, like welding/piping/hvac/rotating/stationary equipment's /automotive/railways/nuclear/NDT etc or anything related to mechanicalactivities.

an ndt inspector is specialized in only NDT.
