Problems w 2004 MB C240 Pls Help

05/22/2008 11:20 PM

I have a 2004 Mercedes C240 with 46000 miles. a couple days ago I was at a traffic light and when I tried to accelerate the car wouldnt move. I ended up towing it home. I tried to drive it about 300 feet and when I stopped and pressed on gas again the car wouldnt move. I scanned it and and the codes read P0715 input/ turbine speed sensor A and P0730 gear ratio incorrect. I dont understand any of this. Does anyone know exactly what this is. I read somewhere it was a common problem, its the turbine input speed sensor in the transmission. its mounted on a plastic plate and the plate tends to crack, with a cracked plate the sensor sends the wrong input speed to the computer and the computer is confused by these signals. Is this true and how much should this cost in repairs??

I am a former Mercedes Benz shop foreman and technician. I left that career back in 2005 so I am familiar with your problem. This code is in the Me control unit or the ETC control unit. Eitherway the code indicates the transmission speed sensor to be fault.

First thing to do is check the transmission fluid. This is difficult because it needs to be in gear, operating temp (transfluid not engine) and then you need a MB dipstick ontop of all that. You should be warned that there is a MB fluid, and I wouldn't use any substitute.

The fluid level may be low due to common leakage at the electrical connector. Engine off Key out. vehicle properly lift and rendered safe you can remove the lower encapsulation panel and then check for leaks. You will need 8mm socket and tool to remove about 6 machine screws. There is an electrical connector with a sliding locking tab which rotates upwards. The plug can then be pulled back. You may need a torx socket to remove the heatshield if it is so equipped. There may be a substantial leak there. If there is a noticeable amount of leakage around that area you may stop, and assess wether you want to fix this leak or have someone else more familiar repair it.

If there is oil on the pins of the electrical connector then you may also check the transmission electronic control module located inside the vehicle. Fluid at times would flow thru the insulated cable harness and fill the module up. This eventually effects operation.

Speed sensor faults aren't so common. I think the only times I have seen thoose codes was when transmission case became damaged due to fluid contamination. I recommend starting with the basics because low fluid makes everything else implaussible.

Some c class vehicles (more common on model 209 CLK) had valeo radiators which caused coolant to enter transmission fluid via the integrated transmission cooler. When this happened we would experience weird driveblity first. Most noteable was a surge like sensation, and some odd vibrations. You can do a moisture test of the fluid. there is a 5 mm allen drain plug on the rear bottom of trans oil pan. You will need to impact the allen socket into the plug (tap with hammer) to help detension the threads. Then snap it loose quickly. I tell you this because they are tight to break loose and may strip out or break your tools. Take a clear glass (dry of course) put fluid in it and let is settle for a long period of time. If it has a light pink look to it that would be one indication. There are labs you can send the fluid to to have moisture content tested. I would also look for hi metal content (there is always a minor amount of aluminum, but if you can notice it in a sample you may confirm internal damage.

If you have a contamination problem It typically requires radiator, transmission, torque conveter, fluid, and flush. Once in a while it would require a module. This may exceed reasonable cost.

The 722.6 transmission is simple and a good transmission. It is very easy to service, but it requires factory parts (not too expensive) and some skill. It also may require an adaptation reset. This is a little more involved.

If you only have 46,000 miles and a delivery date may .. or later you may still be in new car warranty that should cover diag&repair. If you are close in time, but over (6 month) I would take it to a local dealer and then negotiate for Goodwill Warranty Assistance. This was very common in my days with MB.

There is a great possibility that this was an erronous code which can be ignored. Your car may have a completely different issue like a pedal sensor (gas pedal has sensor it is drive by wire technology) This seems more possible if it occured all of the sudden. If you are using a OBD scan tool you don't have access to all the codes.

Remember on vehicles DTC or codes are information not answers. They don't necessarily condem that component. Often times there is a fault logic chain which can decieve the other sensors.

Your best bet is the Mercedes Benz Dealer, and complain if it is not under warranty. If the plate is cracked it is actually a simple repair. Maybe 500 or 1000 dollars. Fluid alone is expensive. The plate is referred to as shift plate, but the parts calls it a electro-conductor plate. You will also reseal the electrical connector which is common failure aswell.

That is a good tip for us Levi. What would happen if you reset your computer to Factory settings? Would that have an impact on your cars performance? Thank you.

The moral of the story is "dont drive expensive cars" They put oil in Min Minors at the factory so you dont get lubrication problems. (see discussion on Cars- lubrication or not, or words to that effect

Honda's go more miles than 46,000km on the factory charge of oil.

Guy round here drove his out of the showroom and a further 57600km before it stopped in traffic.

Called a serviceman who is a buddy of mine, found no oil in sump of engine, and answered "the What" to the question. The thing was about 4yrs old at that stage. Pull down found siezed cams (cause of stoppage) and HUGE wear everywhere. Major job to get fried-on dregs out of the sump.

Apparently thought that it was only neccessary to add fuel and inflate the tyres once in a while, and return to the dealer only if it went wrong.

You can't stop some people doing what they are going to do, anyway.

C Class is not expensive car. All cars have issues, and this is probably minor. Proper repair is always cheapest course of action. An old Toyota or Honda have expensive transmissions with issues. All cars fail even Min Minors.

I Just got rid of my 2002 nissan altima. The cat. conv. were no good and it ruined the engine. The car had only 88,000 miles.I was the 2nd owner. I used only mobil 1 oil and factory filters.Nissan knows of this problem and they will not fix it. There are alot of problems with Japanees cars(some of my friends with Japanees cars and they are complaing).I went out and got me another Benz.

Electron PCBs are problem in any kind of machinery. I have whirlpool automatic top loading washing machine. I purchased it in 2003, recently its water inlet valve stopped working and there was short circuit. This resulted in short circuit in the PCB and ICs also got shortcircuited. Repair mechanic asked me to replace complete PCB as ICs can not be replace by him. Cost of repair worked out to be 1/5th of the machine cost.

So more automations more problems.

My uncle was a MB mechanic for probably 30 years, and he could never get over how often they broke! For the price you pay, you should not run into this many problems. Also, the problems are not usually catastrophic, but small ones that stop you dead, and are expensive to fix because the broken part is so far inside the engine.

Porsche, one the other hand, are anything but hanger queens. They run great, and are covered by a 3 year, 30,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty (50,000 power-train), which they honor as if it's a religion! Also, every time you bring your car in, they check the Porsche database automatically to see if there are any service bulletins. On or off warranty, they'll fix any bulletin issues for free.

Two different perspectives on German quality, I guess.

Porsche is a great vehicle. Campaigns (Bullitens) are fixed by all manufacturers at their expense (even FORD) and Just for the record Mercedes Benz New Car warranty is 4 years and 50,000 miles. They warranty everything (cosemetic, and squeaks included) They also have a goodwill descretion for outside normal warranty claims, and they cover collaterall damage in a case by case basis (I have seen them buy new clothes for someone whos garmets were damaged by a fluid leak) I have seen them for free put in a headliner in a 10 year old vehicle which was not covered by warranty, but they felt it was a rare quality issue.

Your uncle saw only the worst of the problems because his day to day experience were to deal with vehicles experience problems or needing maintenance. I am sure all technicians at all manufacturers feel the same way.

Mercedes Benz paves the way for innovation, and quality. They own their mistakes, and expend every effort to resolve. They recently have launched the new S Class vehicle. It was the most unflawed launch every. Now the vehicle has been out around 1.5 to 2 years my friends are going broke because they don't fail at all. Glad to be out of that business.

All manufacturers are improving quality. Modern engineering resources on both design, and production has really made some great things happen. Raw materials are higher, inflation is great, but MPG's drop every year (must correct for new testing parameters which take road resistance and drag into account) and the price of the vehicle may only inch up slightly. I know apple for apple Mercedes Benz is cheaper today than it was 15 years ago. I think the price on the comprable models flattened out around 12 years ago.

Mercedes Benz is top dog for many reasons. The niche market is different and hard to compare, but I would say Porsche is likely best in those circles. I think Audi is great aswell as several Japanese Mfr.. I personally love Ford Diesel Trucks. I see perfection domestically in those markets. I think Ducati is the best motorcycle, but having owned one I now ride a Harley. I think Suzuki or Honda has the best cycle though. My point here is there is something to love about everything.

Working on cars that break down all the time...isn't that called "job security" for the mechanics at the dealership???

Yes, job security. Problem now is there is less job security everyday. Information travels faster, materials, and designs are better, and they are making the cars more serviceable by less mechanically inclined technicians. The technology age is definately better for all, but the technicians are having a hard time with sustainment. I also suspect vehicles on average will get phased out for newer ones. Exported to struggling nations or recycled to reuse the resources. The more energy cost go up the more logical it is to trade for newer.
