I Need Ideas on the Dust Collection System

05/23/2008 12:37 AM

Dear All,

I'm currently having problem with dusty work environment which we are currently trying to mitigate. We are having a Palm Kernel Crushing Plant in Malaysia. As far as my management is concerned we want to try installing a very simple dust collector without major investment. So far, I've look through some technologies on the ducting and cyclone systems, but they are too sophisticated for the purpose.

Would appreciate ideas from experts. Thank you so much! :)

Dear Sir,

The most cost effective solution would be to provide water spray system at all transfer points and dust emission areas. You may also provide inside the crusher with good nozzles. Even then if your problem is not solved you may think of going for bag filter which is capital intensive.

Industrial vacuum cleaner or one of those ducted type you find in homes, if the dust your trying to extract (in our premesis, it was just from 1 NC drilling station) you could try searching for some wood manufacturing companies who are selling up and aquiring (legally) their extraction system.

Just be very careful if your using the PVC type extraction pipes (save expense) some certain substances when flowing through those pipes will create an electrical charge on the outside, I know of 1 case where that electrical charge would discharge to the Reo-bars in the pre-fab walls of the factory, they ended up running a bare earthing wire loosly wound (1 turn per meter) the length of the piping and earthing both ends. A 1Meter discharge isn't just dangerous if you get hit, but it would scare the living sh.... out of anyone in the area.

yep, Ihave seen the results of a dustr explosion due to staic in the collector pipes. No building left, no machinery either. Sawdust makes the worst type of explosion possible. Solution is to use wound steel ducting its cheap easy to fix in place.

Depending on the size requirements I agree a cyclonic system is best, again you can make one up from galvanised steel sheet, sealing the gaps with bitumen or duct tape.

The trick is to get the stuff to suck into the extraction system, to that end I often use compressed air to direct airflow around the machine into the pickup. this methiod is by far the most effective if you cannot totally encapsulate the dust source as it blows the dust in the right direction, overcoming any localised air current.

in the dust extractor cyclone, have you tried dust bags inside the cyclone for the exhaust, so there is less of the finer contaminents escaping out the exhaust?

if you have a problem of those filter bags clogging from the fine matter, implement some air pressure lines inside the bags with air jets, and every 30sec or so, "fire" a "reverse pulse" into those air lines to knock the crud off the sides of the bags.
