Backgouging is a term used in welding to designate one operation consisting in grinding the root pass from the back side to sound metal and then finishing the weld by the back side.
It's a normal practice for two side weldings. It's also common to assure good weld penetration in "almost" one side welds ( for example Vee weld end preparation) if the back side is reachable (welding plates or high diameter pipes).
Best regards

Excuse me. I´m looking for spanish translation of your concept about backgouge. That´s because I don´t understand some technical english words. My english level is not too much technical.
Saludos

Removing the root to sound weld metal from the back side of a weldment so that a filler/cap pass can be welded from the back side to make 100% penetration weld. This done on tanks and vessels because it is easier and cheaper to back gouge than to prep. and weld a full penetration weld from one side such as done with pipe and small vessels where one cannot get to the back side. It is often done with a carbon arc gouge or a plasma gouge and then ground to remove carbon deposits and slag before welding. It can also be done with a grinder alone but will take allot longer. It is not done with oxy-acetylene torch much anymore because of the large heating of the area around the weld caused by this method.
