Jeep GC chuckle

05/29/2008 9:38 AM

Just to see if anyone really knows, I have a 2001 Grand Cher, Laurado, that gave a DTC set of 442, 455, and 456, all leaks in the EVAC system. Reset and drive gave DTC 442, so I changed caps, and ran the lines and electrical. Still have 442, so I'm asking for ideas as to what I'm gonna find. Guessing it's the LDP(hopefully), as it's the cheapest to replace.

Thx

Oops, sorry.

DTC is diagnostic code from the car's computer.

EVAC is evaporative emmississions control (fuel built up in tank, lines, etc.

LDP is the leak detection pump

Thx,

I have a brother who had a Dodge Ram (Chrysler product like the Jeep) and had multiple DTC's related to the EVAC. I can't remember what was all wrong, but there were some leaks in the rubber hoses, as well at the canister which captures the vapor.

I understand these are common problems with these systems.

Remove the radiator cap, slide a new car underneath and refit cap!

Good morning:

I had a similar problem on my wife's 2001 Voyager. The repair shop did a smoke test and found nothing wrong. They reset the computer and told me if it reappeared I'd have to replace the computer. I found a small cut on the gasket of the fuel filler cap, but that wasn't the root cause. I purchased a DTC reader and logged the code each time the check engine light came on. Generally the same code, very small or small EVAP leak.

We began to notice that the check engine light came on within a few hundred feet of the same place as my wife drove to work. A web search found that there is a small pump which cycles when the engine is started to clear the system of gas fumes. If the vacuum pump doesn't pull down far enough it assumes there is a leak and flags the check engine light.

I looked for the pump (to see if had a cracked housing or loose fitting and found several small cracks in the rubber hose at the test fitting the tech used to run the smoke test. I replaced the hoses (cost of $2.00) and the problem has not returned.

All that said, look for small cracks in the rubber hose of the EVAP system and for loose fittings.

Regards, PeteG.
