know a good program for making pdf files?

05/30/2008 11:09 AM

ok, i think the heading says just about everything.

I'm hoping for a decent free one where i can make, and perhaps even edit pdf documents. I know about pdf995, but it's not great. Does anyone know another?

thanks!

I use CutePDF Writer.

Free from http://www.cutepdf.com/

It utilizes an open source PDF creation engine and is totally free without any ads, pop ups or other annoyances, like PDF995 has.

I've used it on Windows 98 R2 through Win XP Pro and it installs seamlessly as another printer on all of the Windows versions I've used it on.

This is, I am certain, one of those "You get what you pay for...more-or-less" things.

I was relegated to using the "full" Adobe version for quite some time (ps- you may find their Reader_8.1 for free, but NOT a version with creation/editing capabilities). Over a number of years and a couple "upgrades", adobe showed its weaknesses.

Even the full-blown version had difficulties with lots of fonts ... oftentimes it wouldn't even convert simple Arial or Times New Roman correctly if it was italicized in the Word.doc (and then, once the converter was 'confused' by the italics, it would botch a following paragraph by emboldening text that hadn't been bold in the first place).

And, you could forget about having a document come out right if you had any alternating portrait and landscape pages!

I am now using the Scansoft/Nuance converter (5), {sorry, not free} which has been doing phenomenally better. It, too, has displayed a couple weaknesses (such as inability to display ALL portions of an embedded AutocadLT drawing perfectly) ... but, for the MOST part, it is a raging success by comparison!

I'd sure be interested in how the "Open Office" version fares, when tossed a lengthy, highly formatted document to convert. Anybody really put it to the test, yet?

Regards to all ~

No offense intended, here, trust me... I would love to be shown that I had paid good money for a product that I could have downloaded for free.

Please provide a link that actually goes someplace... and, preferably to a pertinent address (i.e., a 'Free Download' of a product that converts docs-to-pdfs).

I followed your suggestion; did a search, and found:

Lots of links to various "Adobe 8.1 products" (< click: it works!)

...all of which, when followed, lead to pages requiring "Fill-Ins"...(< here too!), as soon as you click on "Download Now".

...and subsequently, the "Choose Amount you want to pay & Method of Payment".

If Adobe's giving-away the ability to create pdf's, I wonder how well THAT version works, compared with their Big$ "Professional" version... reviewed in my previous post.

Regards ~

Okay, I didn't think it offensive.

I'm using the free Adobe 8, then there is and addition web based pdf solution, called beyond reader where you can do as you said with pdf files, make them edit etc.. I pleasantly surprised though I do have another program, MS office 2007 which will accommodate this request also I think I think.

I need an easy FTP service, have used CUTE for about 4 years and can't seem to find a free one I can use as well, I need it now and so I'll buy again.

I would love to be shown that I had paid good money for a product that I could have downloaded for free.

At least you have many peers

I use the latest version of the Nuance product on my desktop. They frequently discount it to $99.00 with their OCF package.

On my laptop I use a shareware program called Bullzip. I am sure you can find it by using Google or another search engine. It is self-contained, so easier to load and upgrade than CutePDF.

I use Bluebeam PDF Revu. I think it's a great program. You can convert Autocad, PowerPoint, Excel or Microsoft Word into PDF format. You can convert to a variety of other formats as well. And you can edit the PDF, add text, add lines, add a variety of symbols, add hyperlinks and combine PDFs in one file.

We use CutePDF for most documents and use BullzipPDF which is set-up to print a watermark in the PDF document.

Hi Darren,

A free program you might want to try is PRIMO PDF, you can google it and a download link will come up. Primo will not let you edit but I like it because it works thru the pc's printer set up and what you print is converted to a PDF file. If you can print it Primo Pdf will convert it to a pdf file; instead of selecting the printer you select the Primo Pdf icon on the printer page. Hope this helps.

Wow, i was pretty busy this week so today's been the first opportunity to check this thread - and i wasn't expecting so many replies.

I will definitely test some of those programs, especially the free ones first. If it works and its free i'd rather stick to that first.

CutePDF, primopdf and bluebeam sound really good

Thanks to everyone for replying
