Cast Iron Gate Valves (CIGV) are the best for use in firewater service.

If the fire water systen is underground and in a Process Plant (Refinery, etc.) then use the CIGV with the built in Indicator Post. An Indicator Post is an extension that extends above ground with an indicator so you can see if the Valve is open or closed.

If the Firewater system is above ground then Gate Valves with standard topworks would be used.

Cast Iron Gate valves are used because of the following:

- Lower initial cost

- Durability,Low maintenance cost

there are valves approved as "fire protected" which have improved seals to prevent leaks when fire take place for 1/2 hour at least.

i know it is a "must" at L.P.G. (burning gas) piping to make sure there is no leakage before you can shut the main valve.

check your apllication if there is need for such valves.

Usually rising stem valves, or other type of valve that give a quick visual "Open or Closed" indication. In USA there is an FM class that is 175 PSI rated to better hold up to pressures and surges in fire protection systems.

(In old "western" films, "fire water" was a term used by Native americans for cheap alcoholic beverages. If this is the Fire Water you are referring to, ignore my previous answer and use a food grade valve! )
