What pressure must they contain?

Over what range of temperatures must they seal?

What shapes (cross-section and overall) are they?

How big are they?

What materials are they sealing IN or OUT?

Hands down the best o-ring information guide I ever found is the Parker O-ring Handbook. The number on the book is ORD 5700/USA. you can reach them at www.parkerorings.com Or call to order the book from Parker Hannifin in Kentucky USA at 859-269-2351. Or web search for your local parker distributer, they might have the book on a rack near you. As for purchasing the o-rings, recently Grainger has started to carry o-rings in a very convenient purchasing format. Try www.grainger.com. Good luck.

Additional information.

This is for the head of a piston in a cylinder, the piston compresses a bed of sand. The cylinder ID is 7.37 cm, the piston OD is flexible. This is a static application. Various solvents are pumped through the system at pressures up to 1500 psi. The temperature range is ambient, say 0-40 C. The questions are, I think, 1) how much to oversize the OD of the seal so as to compress it against the cylinder wall and 2) how much to oversize the diametric thickness of the teflon ring so as to compress it against the piston when installed?

Thank you for the Parker suggestion. I have looked the parker handbook carefully and have found it to be helpful in other situations. However, this application is not an o-ring situation.

What type of seal are you going to use? And who is the manufacturer, they should have the reference material you need.

Hi Doug

Many O-Ring seals conform to a UDN (Uniform dash number) and are virtually the same physical dimensions for buna, neoprene, viton, PTFE etc. In this manner a product can have different seals for, say a high heat application or chemical compatability without redesigning for each seal material. Just call your local seal supplier, Parker, Ericks etc. and ask for a catalogue or specific dimensions, typically I.D. and csd (cross section) with tolerances and recommended grove dimensions.

However, I'm not interested in an o-ring for this application and I've have carefully gone through information available from four (4) different o-ring manufacturers including Parker.

This application require a ring between the wall of a cylinder and a piston. This ring provides a particulate seal, much like a wiper. It is PTFE and is slightly oversized so that it is diametrically compressed against the cylinder wall and is slightly thicker than the diametral clearance so that it provides a compression seal against the piston. The questions are how much oversize should this Teflon be in both of these dimensions?

Could it be a Mechanical packing you seek?
