Desktop Hole Punches - An alternative to stapling

06/03/2008 2:18 PM

Hello again CR4 brains,

After looking at possible improvements for staplers, and receiving some great feedback from CR4 users, I have come to the conclusion that the stapler, as a paper fastening device, has probably reached a level of refinement that limits the possible improvements. Yes, adhesive could be used to bond the pages together, but then it wouldn't really be a stapler anymore.

The addition of new functions to a product of this type seems inappropriate – I don't want to create an MP3 playing/ Egg-whisking / Ratchet-Screwdriver (with bluetooth) "Jackalope" product.

Several of the contributers on the "stapler" thread mentioned staple-less devices that cut a slit of paper and thread it through a punched hole, creating a paper fastener for several sheets of paper that does not require any external consumables (staples/glue etc)

This was appealin as a sustainable solution for the paper fastening problem. Binding larger documents with the staple-less device was also an issue. I got on to thinking about hole-punches. I am now looking at how the design of hole-punches could be improved. What are your hole-punch complaints. Have you come across any ingenious punches? (No boxing puns please) Conversely, are the problems you have encountered when punching documents. What mechanisms tend to fail, and what enhancements would you like to see?

Thanks again for the input. The insight of CR4 users never fails to surprise me.

Des-Eng

Oh, this one is so easy. I want a paper-hole-puncher that automatically fastens those little round cloth donuts.

I entirely and wholeheartedly endorse this suggestion without even the slightest measureable degree of reservation or wavering resolve!

There is a company, Hilti, from Germany I believe, that makes rim fire, 22 cal. powered, metal stamping guns. It would be cool if they made a rim fired paper puncher, that could do, like, 200 pages at a time. And it would be soooo much fun to use!

Have been using these for years. Damn site better than staplers as you don't damage the paper if you don't want them joined anymore.

One of the most annoying problems I have encountered with 3 hole paper punches is when punching through a large number of sheets at one time, the paper binds one or more of the punch elements, preventing it from returning and thus releasing the paper.

I know the solution is to punch fewer sheets at a time. However, if the punch is able to handle punching through a number of sheets, it ought to be able to retract from the sheets - but it can't always. Maybe stronger return springs on the punch elements would do it.

I'd guess that there is a balance between retraction force and punch force. A stronger return spring would increase the force necessary to punch the sheets initially.

Replaceable punch knives and collars; recoil action with leverage instead of leverage only and brute force.

The choice now is between cheap that doesn't work very well or doesn't work well for very long...and expensive and heavy. Serviceability would be a happy medium that could make a better punch (both manual and powered) more affordable...and more portable.
