Cleaning of Diffused Sand in Casting

06/05/2008 3:23 AM

One of casting with shallow cavities inside where sand with metal has diffuesed. To clean it with hand tools is not possible as there is no space to approch. Is ther any methode/prcedure/cleaning agent which will not damage the casting.

Cleaning silica particles having diffrent grain size dopped in cavities of metal cast can be successfully performed by: - 1- by a mechanical vibrator using supersonic frequency oscilator. 2- removal by water jet application. The jet diameter can be adjusted from <1 um to 1mm. Super jet velocity is preferable to break the forces bonding the sand to the metal surface. If the cavity is not straight, or may be branched, the needle projecting the jet can be carefully inserted into the path of the cavity while water jet is working. In some cases, fine powder of corundum is suspended in the water stream to help effective removal of inclusion provided that the metal hardness number is high.

Thanks for the suggestion. I would like to know the source of supersonic frequency ocsilator if known to you.

I have just approched this challenge with large aluminum castings. Transmission housings with .250 dia core passages collect a bit of sand that is hard to get out. Gears do not like sand to well. Waterjet sounds like it might be a good scrubbing prior to conventional flushing, but who makes a waterjet that can get down 2 feet into a a.25 dia core passage.
