I regret to find it necessary to comment that too many gurus post sarcastic answers to postings that look like a student's homework.
As a physicist and home handy man, I am interested in technology and found not only this question of interest, but also the link in the answer by JRaef of great interest. I had wondered how these things worked, and now I know enough to satify my curiosity.
I would like to see more direct and honest answers to the questions posed, than the continual harping that a student is getting us to do his/her homework which invariably means a dissertation on the rudiments of researchning the problem from sctratch.
If it were not for CR4 I would not be exposed to such technology. I am more likely to enjoy looking up the link in JRaref' reply, and indeed most unlikely to research the problem from scratch as per "guest's" sarcastic answer to a student.

If the motor isn't to big, it might make sence to consider a frequency inverter. If the motor is really small, it even wil be cheaper than 3 contactors ...
