Compressor Trips on High-Discharge Temperature

06/12/2008 11:47 AM

hi frns

we see that the compressor got tripped on high discharge temperature. but why such type of trip provided. my thought is that due to downstream MOC. and also if temperature is increasing it means there is some fault in compressor.......so if anyother reason plz tell me........

Just like your car has a light or gauge to let you know that the engine is over heating. It lets you know that there is a problem. So that you shut it down before damage is done to the engine. Unlike the car you are not driving it. So on the compressor you are not constantly monitoring the temperature. The manufacture was nice to install a device to shut it down for you.

I do not know what MOC stands for. It would be nice if there were less use of abbreviations. What you call MOC could be call something else here in my part of the world. I do know that the device was to protect the compressor not something down stream from it.

As far as correcting the problem. I would PM the compressor insure the oil level is correct, the intake filter clean, the after cooler fins blown free of debris. Then run it and see if it does it again if it does at that point i would check the temperature of the compressor. To make sure that it it is over heating and not a sensor failure.

Depends on what kind of compressor it is.

If it is a recip machine, then high discharge temp indicates a problem in the cylinder, and prevents overheating damage to rings, valve plates, rider bands, and packing that are often thermoplastic material that can be damaged at high temps.

If it is a screw compressor, then a high disch temp shutdown prevents thermal growth problems that result in rotor to rotor or rotor to case rubs.

If it is a centrifugal compressor high disch temp could indicate surge which is also damaging to the machine.

If a liquid ring compressor, then it may indicate insufficient liquid, which could mean rotor to case rubs.

Is this an air cooled or water cooled compressor? Each has it's own possible causes. For example, if water cooled the heat exchanger tube bundle could be fouled. Pressure gauges on inlet and outlet would give you an idea as to this problem or insufficient water flow, cooling tower fans not cycling properly (no high speed). If air cooled the coil could be plugged with dirt, fan motor not coming on.

Is a GLUK in the DIAG set up. Means we call the service company, they replace a $7USD sensor and charge us $85, reset the DIAG and viola`

Well.High discahrge pressure will be due to the fact that you are over loading the compressor.(i.e you are operating to the max flow),so your intercoolers heat removal capacity has reached a max.Secondly you can get you bundles chemically cleaned, instruments calibrated and try to run the compressor at BEP and check out..if still problem presist please go back to and check whether your compressor was operating at..Also wht type of compressor you are using..is it single or multi centrifugal...
