Arctic Housing

06/13/2008 12:47 AM

I'm looking for a manufacturer of pre-fabricated flatpack housing units, suitable for use in the Canadian Arctic:

One and two bedroom bachelor suites. - bedroom(s), bathroom (wc/shower/sink.) kitchenette, lounge, electric or oil fired - radiant or forced air heating.

turnkey - fridge, washer/dryer, electric stove. double bed, sofa/chairs, dining table/chairs, cupboards, bookcases and cabinets, lighting and fixtures.

Plumbing can be either community water and sewer, or tanks which are filled and emptied via tanker truck.

Construction has to be fast and very simple with low inputs and very little ongoing maintenance requirement, yet warm, comfortable and suitable for permanent accommodation.

I envisage something which is mounted on locally manufactured surface blocks (cribbs), and with provision for cable tensioners and ground anchors.

Temperature can drop below -50 deg C and winds can exceed 100+ Kms/hr.

Can anybody connect me with a manufacturer?????

Sounds great.. I'll build them.. Just trow a little cash my way and I'm on it. That's my kind of project... At least pay me to draw up some up some provisional plans.

I have pens AND paper...

What's the application? The new port towns?

I have actually seen this unit. It's in the same community I'm living in. It is very small and really quite unique. Not exactly what I had in mind. This unit is solar and wind powered. All this uniqueness will make it hard and costly for the owner to repair in the event it is damaged with the very basic materials that can be purchased locally.

My thoughts are for something a bit more conventional, but insulated and engineered to be ground anchored appropriately for the conditions, and very importantly, something which is accurately manufactured, properly engineered and can be assembled by unskilled labour where the finished product looks like a professionally manufacture building and not a "lashed together" shed.

The building and material costs here in Nunavut are unbelievable. As would be the case if you had to furnish it - if you were to buy what is available locally. Theses are the areas where I believe great cost savings can be made. Pre fabrication, including plumbing and wiring - and getting away from the cost of foundation piles would reduce costs significantly. The turnkey aspect of having all the major appliances shipped with the flat packed building would also be a major saving.

I can find a 100 companies which sell steel Quonset, garage, workshop, barn, hanger type structures - but nobody appears to use the same principles, and moved into the arctic housing market with "warmer" materials yet.

I know we are "poles" apart, but take a look at this, which was built here in Cape Town by this company.
