Heated and Cooled Car Cup Holders

08/23/2006 4:14 PM

Ever wish your coffee would stay warm while you were driving? or wish there was a way to keep your soda (pop, coke, whatever) cold in the car? (Yeah, me neither)

Well good news, a new trend in the automotive industry is heated / cooled cupholders. The new BMW 3-Series has them (so I've heard) and Land Rover has a cooler that can house 4 water bottles.

How long before the first lawsuit?

Drink coolers in cars

On the the more budget friendly end of the market, the Dodge Caliber and new Jeep Compass have a drink cooler in the glove box that will hold 4 beverages. http://www.roadfly.com/gallery2/d/25392-3/Caliber- drink-cooler.jpg

Starting somewhere around 92 - 93 Nissanm minivans had an available option for active cooler / warmer. Feature worked like a charm, but the rest of the vehicle was a POS. My bass player/road warrior salesman had one.

Coolers

Fine Anglo-Deutsch tech it is sure to be, too. Propriatory parts, bespoke service stations, and a scalding cup of joe all over your crotch because your fav mug isn't euro-standard. Why bother. Stainless steel vacuum mugs will keep your bevvie @ desired temp +- 3degC for hours, and are available for less than 3 Euros each (or 2-for-$5 in real money). Bad app of old tech.

I actually like this feature for cold cans / bottles. Saves me chilling them in my fridge and then decanting into a vaccuum mug, losing all the fizz in the process! But the system doesn't account for the perculiar British desire for hot tea on a hot day...yes we do have hot days

Bah! Real drivers keep both hands on the wheel or one on the shift stick!
