Design of Muffler

08/24/2006 12:26 PM

Can any one please help to get the design procedures of muffler? I am in need of them as I am not able to get it in the books available in my college library.

Mufflers. hmmm.

08/25/2006 12:25 AM

I designed and built a few mufflers in my hot rod/motorcycle roadracer days. Tuned exhaust systems for both four stroke engines and two stroke engines (but especially two strokes) make use of sound waves to more effectively scavenge the cylinder (and in the case of the two stroke, to stuff mixture back into the cylinder at the perfect time). But for the muffler itself, I used an absorbent around a perforated pipe, or two or three perforated pipes and a few baffles, with flow reversals, so that peaks and troughs would cancel, some of the time.

I suspect that until recently, none of the muffler vendors did anything much more elaborate than empirical design. Now, however, I imagine mufflers are designed more scientifically. I'd assume CFD programs are used, but I really don't have a clue.

Interesting question, and I wish I could help.

Muffler design basics

08/25/2006 7:23 AM

Hi, I often need to evaluate engineering concepts I am not an expert in. One of my first searches is to search in google for the actual topic (muffler design) or an applet to help grasp the more complex elements by playing with a simulation (muffler design applet).

Philip E. Smith's book: "Scientific Design of Intake & Exhaust Systems" would be an excellent place to start understanding which questions to ask.

You will find sources of designing a muffler in books , internet , but i would advice to look em in junk yard and look for muffler near to your design you intend to . whether for a bike , car , truck , look for muffler cleaner shop in your area who cut it open to remove carbon deposite and again weld it ......
