Car That Runs on Five Fuels

08/25/2006 8:48 AM

Volvo recently developed a prototype car that can run on five different fuels: hythane, biomethane, natural gas, bioethanol E85 and petrol. Called the "Multi-Fuel vehicle" (way to be creative guys), it is optimized for all five fuels. It has a number of tanks for the gaseous fuels and one for the liquids; and uses an array of sensors and switches to adjust fuel quantities and air intake for proper burning. It's also supposed to be quite environmentally friendly.

So what would it take to add a sixth fuel, say diesel into the mix (aside from a completely different engine)?

Not Informed?

"goes like a boat anchor" This concept car apparently can do 0-60mph in 8 sec, just 1 sec behind it's production V70 turbo counterpart. That's right up there with the most of the European sportwagons. The 5 cyl 2.5l low pressure turbo multifuel engine is basically the same as the production gasoline version, and also the basic block as the D5 turbodisel sold in Europe. It will require an increase in compression to run diesel or bio diesel. The other fuels would pre-detonate at this compression and blow up the motor.

As many of you know or don't know John Deere had an engine that started on gasoline and ran on dieselback in the 50's. So it is possible to add diesel to the mix.

Re:John Deere with Gasoline Start/Diesel Run

We had a few of these John Deere tractors on our farm back in the 40's, 50's and 60's, and they ran quite well using carburetors, fairly low compression, and magneto / spark plug ignition. They would start OK on the "other" fuel if hot, but would not start cold except on gasoline. Cold start required draining the fuel out of the carburetor, then switching to gasoline. We would start them on gasoline and run them on gasoline until they reached operating temperature, then switch to the other, cheaper fuel. We didn't call the "other" fuel diesel fuel, though, just "tractor fuel." It looked, felt, and smelled different than the diesel fuel of those days; similar to, but not exactly like, kerosene. May have been a different grade of diesel, however, I just don't know. I do know that we would occasionally use kerosene if "tractor fuel" was not available. Both kerosene and "tractor fuel" were plentiful and cheap in those days, even compared to gasoline at 20-25 cents per gallon.
