Vibration analysis

06/16/2008 9:29 AM

I have a compressor foundation design as raft, 1000mm deep. But I need to check the foundation against vibration of 500rpm using basic manual approach. Please can you furnish me with a quick formula for establishing resonance in order for me to fill safe.

Back in the 70's my father, working for Gilbert-Commonwealth, was involved with such testing for numerous power-generating plants. The resultant data collected was quite overwhelming ~ including (ultimately) various significant differences between concretes (slabs) produced in the states versus those overseas (UK).

I am not the expert, here, but my off-hand suspicion is that any "quick formulas" would require a considerable amount of additional "Input" from your end , before anything of any value could be offered.

Wishing you success ~

The design of foundations and the associated unknowns will not allow you to better design the foundation. The factors of safety (uncertainty) are 3 in general which is too vague to accurately assess if the compressor will suffer.

The damping inherent with most sunken foundations (non-linear friction between sides of the foundation and the soil) will significantly reduce any vibration resonance.

A foundation will, in general, have a much greater mass than the rotating mass that the compressor has. It shouldn't be a problem.
