Sound Insulation for Condo Balcony

06/16/2008 2:10 PM

My problem is:

I live in Marina City, a high-rise condo building, in downtown Chicago. It's in a wonderful location with a view of Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, and downtown Chicago.

However, when a fire truck or ambulance passes by on one of the streets down below, "in the canyon" created by the surrounding buildings, the sound comes right into our condo doorways (leading to the balconies) with a volume only slightly less than being on the street right next to them.

I'm looking for an inexpensive solution.

The balconies are made of concrete.

I believe that the sound is reflected off of the underside of the balcony(ies) above ours, and that reflected sound is directed into the doorway. Of couse, when the doors are closed, the sound is diminished drastically, since the windows and doors are of commercial quality.

My question is: Would it be helpful to adhere some exterior sound insulating panels to the underside of the balcony above ours?

We are on the 52nd floor. The building has 62 floors.

I attempted to attach a photo to this question. If it doesn't make it, please go to Google images, and search for "Chicago Marina City" to see many photos!

If you are right, then adhering panels to the balcony above should help. Might be worth a try. But I doubt that is the issue. The reflection is probably from the building across the way.

I assume you have drapes across the balcony door? Closing them should help..

Actually, it's "modern" 50's type condo, so it's got those aluminum vertical blinds, and no fabric at all, except on the sectional sofa. So there's a clue! Perhaps we could just bring some more fabric into the space, in interesting ways that don't alter the "cool, clean look."

I agree with you about the buildings across the way. That makes more sense than any other idea.

Thanks for the response.

Hi,

Good question ... nuisance problem ... challenging solutions.

I live on the 20th floor of a 30 story building with exterior walls on three sides. Around are many other buildings as well. Even when the noise source is in front of the building, with the windows closed, it's not too bad, but with the balcony door open, even though it's on the side, there is a lot of noise coming in.

It was already suggested, and I have to concur, while the ceiling of the balcony may be a contributor, I think the larger problem is the reflected sound from other buildings. You mentioned "in the canyon", and truly it acts just that way with lots of reverberations and echos.

There are some things that can help, but aside from closing the window / door to the balcony, nothing else can help much. (for me, I like the windows open to let the breeze come through.)

Plants ... if you have the room, add some large plants in large planters on the balcony, or just inside. Not much is better and more attractive at sound absorption. The more 'forest', the better .

Room Divider ... If your balcony is on the side like mine, and you don't use it for your primary view, simple dividers in front can help a lot, and you can add some 'trick' treatments to the back-side to help.

Again, nothing is going to be a good as just 'closing the door', assuming the glass is good, double-pane or better, insulated glass, but these ideas may give you some options.

Good luck ...

Dcad makes a couple really good suggestions. A bunch of plants on the balcony would help. Although you might need a jungle out there to really cut the sound energy. Just be careful that you don't overload the balcony.

Again thick fabric room dividers or drapes are your best bet.

Plants on the balcony will also absorb carbon dioxide...Even if it doesn't help much with the sound, it should make the balcony a much more pleasant environment...
