PWHT -PARTIAL PWHT FOR OLD USED VESSEL

06/16/2008 2:21 PM

I did came across a project with following:-

A U Stamped vessel already of 5 years of service life. Now we have just fabricate the shell & Bottom dish whereas the top dish will be cut from older vessel and to be welded to newly fabricated equipment.

Design pressure is 70 kg/cm2 ,MOC SA 516M Grade 485(70)

Shell 63 thk,bot.dish 75 thk.

The work does not requires any approved u stamping nor it is to be carried as per R stamp

My query:-1)After fabrication of complete vessel ,new with old top dish it is to be hydrotested.now can we keep hydrostatic test pressure same as per CODE ASME UG99 b,or is there any clause in code which allows to use lesser pressure,if not then suggest in this condiiton what would be ideal hydrostatic test pressure.

2)All weldings to pressure parts to be post weld heat treated as per the design code requirements, however for the welding of shell to top dish circumferential joint while PWHT top dish which is older part will also see the temp of PWHT thus can this produce an adverse affect on the top dish properties.

Even though you do not require an "R" stamp for this alteration, the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) has useful guidance. The NBIC is the code that governs the application of the "R" stamp.

1 - RC-2051 states that the test pressure shall be the minimum required to verify the leak tightness integrity of the repair, but not more than 150% of the MAWP on the nameplate. As your repair is virtually a full fabrication of a vessel part, I would recommend the original test pressure per UG-99.

2 - PWHT does have effects on the original part. You can get a sense of what they might be by reviewing the WPS/PQR of the original construction. Every weld procedure qualified to ASME Section IX with PWHT has the weld coupon subjected to the PWHT temperature for a certain time. The actual PWHT time must be less than the qualified time. This qualified time in the WPS/PQR probably will have time enough for 2 or 3 cycles. For a 75 mm vessel, 2-1/4 hours per cycle is the minimum per Table UCS-56, so if the WPS/PQR is qualified for 5 hours of PWHT, your final properties will be OK.
