Stainless steel 4mesh wire boxes

06/20/2008 9:02 AM

I want to make boxes out of 4mesh stainless and I need a way to secure the side and bottom I asked about welding and will look into it more but would still like to find another way . There has to be a way to install small crimps or rings but they need to withstand high temperatures ,I have looked into hog rings and tried them but the are not small enough to hold the wire tight . The crimps have to fit between the 1/4 inch squares and hold two of the wires .The best bet would be a plier or crimper with a magazine that held multiple crimps ,rings, etc.

Try Brazing (Vaccuum or appropriate atmosphere required)

Since bwire brought up soldering, what exactly do you mean by high temperature?

When I think of high temperatures, I'm thinking of inside jet engines (1000-2200 or so °F), where solder is useless. Others may think of boiling water as hot, in which case solder would be fine.

It also makes a big difference which liquids and/or gasses will come in contact with the boxes, especially while they are hot.

Hot meaning inside wood stove temps or hot wood fire not sure what that may be for sure but the stainless is rated at 2600 melting point and 1400 for extended periods . Thank you .

Hello naturaledge, Have you looked at SS hog rings?

I found this link Spenax. I think if the ring was sized to

the same or larger to the wire size in the mesh it could work

and they have the tools the link is at the bottom of the page.

Hope this helps

You might want to look into something like an old belt lacer. They might have eveb made the sdtaples out of SS.

Hello again, I saw your post in another fourm group, you said hog rings would not work.

One other way I can think of is cut the mesh like a open cardboard box and fold the sides up and use SS safety wire and the twister pliers it can be quick.

I had to build some sample probes with thermal couple probes mounted at the tips. All of this was to mounted in the path from a coal fired boiler all the way to the stack. A lot of wire to mount and SS safety wire was the cheapest and fastest way to do the job.

You could cut the wire to a length and bent in half insert through the sides and then twist. use as many as needed to secure the sides.

Still the hog rings staplers with the correct size should work.

Anyway good luck.

Hello and thanks for the ideas but i have tried hog rings and sent a sample to a company and they used a pneumatic hog ring tool but the rings were not tight enough and it distorted the box badly it was kind of a joke and now i am stitching the boxes together with wire and it works but still slow and in reply to another comment I have folded the wire and crimped but can't do it to the bottom as easy, there is a hog ring tool that has small rings but they are aluminum and unless it has a different tip it will also distort the box . i will keep searching . Thank you .
