i have a steel melting shop with 2 nos of induction furnaces of 8 ton capacity each followed by a 4/7 continous casting machine which will produce 100mm billets.what should one keep in mind if we plan to get into conversion process of sponge iron to billet.what would be the conversion cost on the whole and what all points one needs to keep in mind while going for conversion with the party?please advice in detail. thank you.

Without knowing your costs and efficiencies, accounting answers would be less than helpful.

However, 100 mm billets are pretty small, Unless you are ultimately making small diameter wire, the reduction ratios will be such that the material will not be of best internal soundness.

Are the 100 mm billets round or square, sharp or broadly radiused corners?

Is submerged or shrouded tundis?

What is the typical sulfur and phosphorus content of the sponge iron?

What is mold oscilation distance and frequency?

IS straight (stick) caster or raddius?

What is metallurgical distance?

EMS? STeel deoxidation practices?

End use of the steel cats?

Dear sir,

Cost per ton mainly on few factors. 1. Raw material which party is giving you. 2. Power 3. Yield. 4. Losses

Power. You may provide auto melt control which will optmise the power

Yield can be improved by casting sequence heats. Since you are having two furnaces this possible, you may try to take maximum number of sequence heats. Industries are doing now a days 1+4. For achieving lot of dicipline is required in the plant and continuous monitoring. Provide a PLC & SCADA for the total operation. You can improve the operation by taking corrective steps. You may start sequence 1+1 to start with.

Regards,

Unni
