10mw laser power supply

06/21/2008 3:54 PM

Hello.

I have a simple question. I have a 10mw red oem laser. And i want to incorporate it into a small project i am working on. I have a 15vdc power supply providing power to my project. But this is to high of a voltage for the laser. the laser needs 3 to 5 vdc to work properly. The problem i have it that i dont know how to properly provided power to the laser. I have seen other laser system which have a full pcb to provide the electricity. I do not know were to get one of these. If i do not need one i do not know how to turn the 15vdc into 5vdc properly. Thanks in advance for any help.

Use an LM7805 voltage regulator... this site has a pdf download.. they are a cheap and readilly available device with just 3 connections Volts in 5volts out and zero volts..

ha. That must of been the simplest question you have answered in a while. Well thank you for the help.

this reglator would do the job right?

Yes... but you'll need some resistors (or a potentiometer and resistor) to adjust it to the desired output.

Can't you just use Ohm's Law? I mean isn't just a matter of using a resistor?

For that matter, you should be able to run the laser off a few AA bateries.

well i have built a driver for the laser. From a video, HERE. But it does not work properly. I used a 9v battery and the out put was ~6vdc which is way to high for the laser. I also tested the the circuit on my 15vdc power supply which actually puts out 20vdc and the output was ~19vdc. The optimal power for this laser is 3.2vdc.

and VERMIN i have no clue what that is. I asked here on this site because i have asked a question here before and the answers were very helpful. but i will search for information on this. thanks. I did use 2 AA batteries to supply power to the laser and they worked well but i would rather not use batteries as they are expensive and can not provided sufficient power for more than an hour or so.

Then go to an electronics shop and purchase one of those black box power supplies that plug into the wall. They give DC at all sorts of voltages and currents.

I already have one power supply going into my project box ( 20 volts), so i don't want to have to drill another hole so i can provide power for the laser. it would not look very good and it would cause a lot of clutter when playing with the whole thing.

the laser is part of a laser show thing I'm building. Just a fun little project to keep me entertained. I'm only 15 and this is a good way to learn about the way component parts work.

So, take some of the 20V and create a voltage divider. A 10mW laser diode is not going to pull much current away from the rest of your circuit.

And you're only 15?! Good god, man that's 21 in hexidecimal... 105 in dog years!!! Heck! I'm only 10! But I do have this connection that may come through with candy, alcohol, and porn! Maybe I can hook you up.

yeah i don't know how to do that. Schematics anywhere?? i don't know much about any of this.

i dont like candy to much, alcohol is gross, porn is free on the net. But weeds good stuff. I can hook you up :P

There are several places on the web that have archives of all sorts of circuits. A voltage divider consists of a couple of resistors. The difference in their resistance determines the voltage at a particular point. Try Goggling a little.

And I know I'm young, but I've moved onto morphine! "Happy! happy! Joy! Joy!"
