Lockheed Martin Wins NASA Moonship Bid

09/01/2006 10:15 AM

Lockheed Martin has been awarded the multi-billion dollar contract to design and build the Orion "moonship", which will replace the space shuttle. The Lockheed Martin proposal beat a joint bid by Northrup Grumman and Boeing. NASA hopes to have Orion vehicles in use by 2014 for manned space travel, including trips to the Moon.

Remind me again why we need to go to the Moon? Didn't we do this a number of times from 1969-1974?

Why we need to go to the Moon

09/02/2006 12:00 PM

I think NASA has multiple objectives with this:
1) it's a test-bed for the Man-on-Mars to come;
2) it's a cool gathering point for the 'final push';
3) the moon may be strategically and financially important due to its potential mineral resources.
Any others?

Why we need to go to the Moon

09/04/2006 3:56 AM

As with any thing else, we'll go because we can, and it's in our nature to explore. But the benefits (such as a handy vacuum for industrial processes that need it) won't be known until we get there!

moon mission

09/05/2006 8:08 AM

Considering what was achieved back in the late 1960's with what we would all agree was very primative technology, imagine what could be accomplished now. The new technology and discoveries the first missions produced would pale in comparison to what could be achieved this time around. Further, NASA needs something the average non-scientist can get excited about to re-kindle support.

To the Moon, Alice!

09/05/2006 8:23 AM

Didn't they leave their dune buggy there before. Perhaps they want it back.

The government that controls the moon rules the world. A missle launched from the moon doesn't even have to have a war head. It merely has to have sufficient mass and a guidence system.

Where else? The excess money being printed has to go somewhere.

I tend to agree with the logic of control and completely hate the thought. War is out dated by at least 40 years. The new "war" is money and science. Whoever controls the moon controls the science on the moon. The money created by the science means that the finaicial control of the world is accomplished. So why go to the moon? To Rule the world from the footstool of the Gods. Yes! Pinky, To rule the world!

Well said Alice. I think that before anybody else go's to the moon there should be an international agreement that like the Antartic no one nation owns it. As an English man I deplore US president bush's and Tony Blair's attitude to going to war against Iraq when neither nation was threatend by Iraq or Saddam Hussain. I can just imagine what would happen if one nation gained control of the moon, it would be the downfall of this planet as we know it.

I'm always amazed that the idea still goes around that the moon shots were faked. Does anybody really think that a project involving so many people for such a long period of time could cover up a scam as huge as that? Remember, Clinton couldn't bury a lot smaller (sic) act then that!
