Most expensive places to drive

05/10/2005 9:45 AM

MSN Money has an article on the most expensive cities to commute. It takes into account the cost of gas, time in car and mileage. The winner is Atlanta with the average household spending $4,573 a year.
The top 5 are:
1. Atlanta $4,573
2. Birmingham, Ala. $4,448
3. Nashville-Davidson, Tenn. $4,418
4. Orlando, Fla. $4,382
5. Jacksonville, Fla. $4,202
My commute is tiny compared to most of my co-workers and I spend @$1500 a year in gas. When I lived in Boston my commute was closer to $3500. How does your commute stack up?

Backroads

I spend about $50 a week and about 2 1/2 hours a day commuting to and from work. I also get to see mountain vistas, rolling hills, and family farms. When I lived in Rochester, MI and commuted to Detroit (a 20-mile trip), I still spent 2 and 1/2 hours a day in the car and spent what (at the time) felt like a small fortune in gasoline. Statistics don't lie, but they can oversimplify.

I don't think that they lie as much as you are not representative of the vast majority of people who commute into the Troy/Albany NY area. The higher the cost of property the longer the commutes; Albany is not an expensive city to live in and most people probably don't commute for more than an hour a day. I can agree with the commute being much more scenic though; I hate driving on highways, give me a nice country drive any day.

Commuting Expense

05/10/2005 11:06 AM

I commute about 100 miles a day from northern Saratoga County to Troy (Albany). At 25 mpg, that means 4 gallons per day @ $2.30, 230 days per year works out to $2116 per year. Per the article, I should double the number to include my wife (? - not accurate). A much bigger variable is the efficiency of the vehicles driven. I'd be interested to learn if there are regions that tend toward enviro-friendly vehicles and others with an exceptionally high percentage of trucks and SUVs.
