Wikipedia, How to create public database.

06/26/2008 11:17 AM

Dear CR4 Readers:

How would someone create a Wikipedia type site. I would like to create a site for a specific field of knowledge. The site would allow people from anywhere to add data to its knowledge base, and may be extremely beneficial to the public in almost any country.

You would think that since Wikipedia started, there might be some good alternative ways to build a public data base.

Any help woud be appreciated!

Hello Cokelee:

This link is really great. I can't believe how much information they have included.

Thanks so much.

Try Dabble Database, a really flexible online database which has a creative commons license for public applications. Dabble not only gives a free creative commons licence, it allows you to totally modify the database structure at any stage. I love it.

http://www.wikimatrix.org/ is a website for comparing multiple wiki platforms so you can choose one that will suit your needs. Like hosting and WYSIWYG.

The other type of public database you could be referring to is leaving a MYSQL (or most other SQL servers) running, and the port open on the firewall, with no password protecting it.

So, then you'll have a publically available database
