Material Composition & Differences.

06/27/2008 4:18 AM

Whether a meterial called "Low alloy steel" having carbon content of 0.377% can be called equivalent to ASTM A105 or this low alloy steel can be forged to make material grade ASTM A105 ?

Really depends on original billet size. With out knowing billet size answer is no.

A105 Table 1 calls for .35 max carbon.

.377 is above that .

If you have the original billet size, than perhaps that carbon level could be qualified.

What is the original billet cross section???? WHat is balance of chemistry, there are more requirements than just Carbon.

BTW in best case, material could be said to be "conforming to A 105," but does not certify product "to A 105." This is important!

Milo response is absolutely correct (as usually)

But just a point: you don't specify if the carbon content is derived from ladle analysis (you may have some certification) or is a product analysis made by you.

A105 product analysis allows for small deviations in chemical composition, depending of billet cross section. Regarding carbon content, if your material have less than 200 inch2 cross section it will not comply with A105. (see Table 2 of such standard)

Best regards

Table two is exactly correct. It is important to note that that is for the original billet or bloom size, not final section. I'll relook at that tomorrow.

Nice collaborating with you, partner.
