DC Traction Motors

A friend has a DC traction motor for something like a small electric car. Its model # of the motor is 192ZC52 and says its 100v 82amp. There are 4 connections on the motor for battery cables (or connection points anyway). The question is what are those connection points and what do they connect to. (obviously to the batteries at least indirectly). Can he run it off of a straight set of batteries without expensive controller? Thanks.
