Hunting Ratio for parallel axis, locked train reduction system

07/05/2008 11:16 AM

How critical is "hunting ratio" when determining gear-tooth combinations for 1st and 2nd stage reduction in maritime propulsion design considerations?

Propulsion shaft horsepower in the 10,000 to 20,000 range?

The advantage of a hunting tooth gear ratio design is that every tooth on the bull gear engages every tooth on the pinion. This makes it unnecessary to match mark the gears. In designs that are not of a hunting tooth arrangement, specific wear patterns develop because particular teeth on the pinion only engage with particular teeth on the bull gear. These gears are match marked because if they are not reassembled with exactly the same teeth engaged, the result is high wear and vibration.
